The sun is an essential source of energy and life, but it can be hazardous to your health if you are exposed to its harmful rays for long periods.

The ozone layer is the earth's natural protection from the sun, but it has been depleted.  This resulted in our direct exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays which are the main contributors of a lot of health issues. 

Here are some of the health risks of overexposure to the sun:

1. It increases your risk to skin cancer.

Getting cancer is one of the possible consequences of overexposure to the sun.  According to a study, 20 percent of Americans develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

The most serious form of skin cancer is called melanoma.  This disease is most common in young people between 14 and 30 years old, and it is one of the leading causes of skin cancer deaths.  Sunburn and Overexposure to ultraviolet rays are the leading causes of melanoma, but it can also be triggered by other factors such as genetic flaws and weak immune system.

Another type of skin cancer is the non-melanoma skin cancer.  It is less deadly but it can cause disfigurement and other health issues if left untreated. 

2. It exposes your risk to actinic keratosis.

Actinic keratosis is skin growth that appears in areas that are overexposed to the sun.  These include the face, hands, forearms and the "v" of the neck.  This disorder is not malignant, but it can develop into non-melanoma cancer if not given proper medical attention.

3. In increases your risk to premature aging.

Aging is a natural process.  But with overexposure to the sun, you can look older than your real age.

Excessive exposure to the sun's rays can cause your skin to wrinkle, thicken, develop dark spots and age prematurely.  You can avoid premature aging by protecting yourself from UV radiation and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun's rays.

4. It increases your risk to cataract and other eye damage.

Overexposure to the sun increases a person's likelihood to develop cataract.  It is a form of eye damage which is characterized by impaired vision due to the loss of transparency of the eye lens. 

Other forms of eye damage which are related to UV exposure include pterygium, skin cancer around the eyes, and macular degeneration.

To avoid these problems, you should wear proper eye protection like sunglasses especially when you are exposed to the sun.

5. It weakens your immune system.

Overexposure to the harmful rays of the sun may weaken your body's natural defenses against infections.  A weakened immune system makes your body vulnerable to diseases.
