Wine is a fermented beverage that not many people want to drink because of its alcohol content as it can be harmful to health.  But not all wines are that harmful because those who chose to drink wine in moderation are enjoying its health benefits.

Here are the health benefits of red wine that you should know:

1. It enhances sleep

According to new research red wine helps to promote sleep because it contains melatonin, a chemical which plays a big role in the regulation of our body clock.  The study further said that drinking a glass of red wine before sleep helps to induce sleep.

Aside from its being a sleep enhancer, melatonin is also an antioxidant which helps to cleanse the body from toxins that can cause damage to the cells.  It is also believed that red wine helps to prevent cancer and delay the aging process.

2. It helps to promote brain and heart health and longevity

Red wine is packed with resveratrol, a compound which is believed to protect the brain against Alzheimer's disease, dementia, heart and cardiovascular diseases.  The potent effects of resveratrol play a big role in longevity.

3. It helps to prevent lung cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer

A glass of red wine per day is capable of reducing the risk of lung cancer by 13 percent, a research conducted by the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain suggests.

The study further suggests that drinking at least four glasses of red wine per week has the capability to lower the risk of prostate cancer by as much as 50 percent. 

Nutrition and health experts also believe that drinking no more than two glasses of red wine per day can help to reduce the risk of breast cancer.  They however warned women that consuming more than two glasses daily can increase that risk.

4. It helps to prevent colds

A study conducted in Spain suggests that people who consume at least two glasses of red wine per day reduced their chances of getting colds by 44 percent.

5. It helps to fight inflammation

Resveratrol, the most important health component of red wine, has also been found to contain anti-inflammatory properties.  This is one of the reasons why red wine helps to provide a powerful defense against inflammation which is the primary cause of a host of other diseases.

6. It helps to lower bad cholesterol level

Resveratrol is indeed a substance with many health benefits. Recent studies have proven that it is able to lower low density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) level in the body.  Saponin, another substance found in red wine, was also found to lower cholesterol levels.

These are but a few of the health benefits that you can get for drinking red wine.  But you should remember that this should not be taken as reason for you to drink it in excessive quantities.  Moderation is still the key to enjoy the health benefits of red wine.
