Are there other smoothie ingredients besides vegetables and fruits?

Aside from vegetables and fruits, you can add other ingredients which are nutritious.  They can even make up for a small meal.  These added ingredients can provide you with fiber, carbohydrates monounsaturated fats and lots of vitamins.

Here are some of the ingredients that you may add to your healthy smoothie:

1. Cooked brown rice

Cooked brown rice or unpolished rice is loaded with energy boosting manganese, fat burning fiber and cancer busting selenium.  You can purchase brown rice from your local health food store.  Soak brown rice in water for 30 minutes before cooking it to soften the grains.

2. Oats

Oats are packed with lots of soluble fiber which promotes the lowering of cholesterol levels.  Oats can make a good smoothie ingredient because of its bland taste.  Add them to boiling water for at least 10 minutes and allow them to cool before adding them to your smoothie blend.

3. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter contains high levels of monounsaturated fats which you body needs to combat heart diseases.  If you intend to include peanut butter in you smoothie, you should see to it that it does not contain hydrogenated vegetable oils which are harmful to your health.

4. Tofu

Tofu is a natural source of protein, carbohydrates, fats and alcohol and fiber.  It is an energy-giving food which also helps to lower bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body.

5. Sesame Seeds

Sesame seeds contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein.  It works to lower your cholesterol levels, reduce stress and fatigue, provide nourishment to your skin and prevent certain types of cancer.

 6. Ground Nuts

Any kind of nuts as long as they are finely ground can be a good addition to your smoothie recipe.  They contain monounsaturated fats, fiber and protein and they help to lower your bad cholesterol levels, provide you with energy and protect you from the risks of heart diseases.

Consuming your smoothies

You should consume your smoothies within 10 minutes after making them.  This will ensure that you will be able to get their health benefits before they react to oxidation.  Do not store your smoothies; they have the tendency to deteriorate rapidly.
