Meditation is a perfect therapy for people who feel a sense of emptiness inside.  If you feel that you are happy and contented with your life, if you don't desire to know your inner self and you are not seeking for inner peace and happiness, meditation may not be necessary for you.

We usually look for the meaning of our existence through external events and by what other people say.  These can often lead us to live a life to please other people or satisfy our own egoistic perspectives.

Meditation is the key that opens the door to our inner self.  It helps us to discover who we are in spirit, and it makes us see the real meaning of peace and happiness.

If you want to practice meditation, there are certain things that you need to do in order to achieve your goals.  Here are some meditation tips that can help to give you the best results:

1. Get the help of an experienced mentor.

Getting a good teacher is the best way to learn to do things properly.  You can acquire good meditation skills by joining a meditation class taught by an experienced practitioner.  You will also learn faster if you practice it in the company of other students.

2. Do not meditate on a stomach that's too full

Your body diverts energy your digestive system if your stomach is full.  This makes you feel sleepy and tired.  Having a stomach that's too full is not the best time to meditate, and doing it when you're hungry is not good either because you can't concentrate fully when your stomach is craving for food.

3. Make yourself comfortable.

Many people practice yoga or meditation on a cross-legged sitting position.  This is because they are comfortable with it.  You can actually meditate even if you don't sit in a lotus position.  You can even meditate while you are sitting on a chair or kneeling on a cushion.  Any sitting position can be good for meditation as long as you can be comfortable and upright as you can.

4. Choose a specific time to meditate

You should allocate a specific time to allow yourself to meditate without being disturbed or distracted.  When you meditate, you should disconnect yourself from all distractions like your phone, pets, children and noise, even for just five minutes.  Make it a regular practice for everyone in your household to notice and respect.

5. Develop a pattern that goes well with your body clock

You cannot get the maximum benefits of meditation if your body and mind are not ready.  If you are an early riser, you can meditate in the morning to prepare yourself for the day ahead.  But if your mind is occupied with all the plans at the start of your day, you can do it after work, probably within 20 minutes before going to sleep.  You must be sure to clear your mind before you meditate.

6. Meditate regularly

Practicing meditation regularly even for just five minutes each day can be beneficial to your life.  Do it with a little warm up routine to stretch your hips and relax your upper body.  If you choose to meditate in the morning, finish it with a warm drink to take you off your meditative state.  This will help to prepare you for your daily activities.

7. Designate a special place for meditation.

You should designate a special place for your meditation.  If you can, you should create an atmosphere that can help to give you a better focus, like a candle, some flowers or a beautiful scene by the window.  Always make the place ready for your next session.

8. Be grateful for your progress.

The ability to meditate fully takes time to develop.  You will go through a lot of meditation experiences before you achieve the real benefits of meditation.  Whatever meditation experiences you have encountered, always be grateful for them, for they are all part of your development.  Don't be hard on yourself.  Meditation is intended to allow you to cultivate a positive emotional attitude towards yourself, to give you inner peace and emotional well-being.
