Stress comes normally in the workplace. It is often caused by our desire to cope up with the demands of our work. It is impossible to find work which is not associated with stress in one way or another.  It is a reality that everyone must face, and the best thing to do about it is to identify its specific trigger factors and do something to address them.

There is no way to eliminate stress in the workplace, but there are ways to deal with it to reduce its negative impact in our lives.  Here are some of them:

1. Identify what caused it

The best way to resolve a problem is to identify what caused it.  This will enable you to dig down on it and find a solution to stop it once and for all.  This is the same with stress.  You need to know what caused it in order to find the appropriate ways to bring it to an end.

2. Deal with it as soon as possible

Once you have identified the cause of your stress, you should devise a way to deal with it as early as possible.  If the stress is caused by your poor work attitude such as tardiness, procrastination or passing the buck, you need to change for the better in order to eliminate its effect on you.  But if the problem is caused by a fellow employee or unreasonable work demands, you need to bring the matter to somebody who has the authority to resolve it.

If your stress is caused by an unreasonable boss, you need to prepare for a bigger decision because your office might too small for you and him to stay together.

3. Organize your tasks

Organize your tasks according to priority and urgency.  Focus on each task at hand until it is completed.  This will make you more efficient and productive.  Be punctual and manage your time effectively so that you can avoid working on the rush.

4. Take a break

Many people believe that working continuously without taking time off can make them extra productive.  This is not quite true because neglecting to take breaks can wear you down physically and mentally.  You need to take advantage of break periods.  These will help to keep you refreshed.  This will also help you to recharge you and restore your focus.

5. Socialize

You need to engage in activities with friends, especially the ones who do not work in the same organization that you belong to.  This will help to divert your mind from the familiar faces that constantly remind you of the pressures in your workplace.

6. Exercise

Many health and fitness experts assert that exercise is a good stress buster.  It is a good way to make you fit physically and mentally.  It helps to improve your mood by stimulating your brain to release “feel good” hormones.”  It also enhances your mental function with the improved supply of oxygenated blood to your brain.

7. Seek help

When things get harder to handle, you should seek advice from people who understand your situation, like a close colleague or a family member.  Find ways to discuss your situation with your manager or employer.  It is his primary concern to iron out problems that cause work-related stress to his workers.

Stay away from artificial coping devices such as alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine; they only increase your stress levels after their temporary effects have subsided.
