From generation to generation, aromatherapy has been used to heal many forms of illnesses. Many cultures around the world recognize essential oils as a powerful mood enhancer, stress reliever, pain killer and ailment healer as well.
For centuries, people have acknowledged aroma as an effective means to lift our spirits, enhance our energy and induce us to sleep. It has been given credit for its soothing and calming effect on people who are suffering from stress or grief.
The aromas of essential oils have a powerful influence on our moods. The scents that our nostrils send to the limbic system play a big role in our mood and state of mind. The limbic system is the part of our brain which is closely associated with our emotions, memory and learning.
There are actually a lot of simple aromatherapy formulas you can do at home to lift your spirits up. Here are a few of them:
1. Body massage lotion
In order to make a soothing massage lotion, pour one ounce of carrier oil into a small glass container. The carrier oil can be made from almond, kernel, apricot or grape seed. Add 3 to 4 drops of essential oil of your choice and shake well to produce a good mixture. Your lotion is now ready to apply.
2. Relaxing scented bath
Fill your tub with warm water and add 2 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Bergamot and 2 drops of Cedarwood. Stir the water or swish it around in order to create a perfect blend. Your scented bath is now ready for you.
If you want an alternative scent for a change, you can also use 2 drops each of Lavender, Marjoram and Clary Sage and 1 drop Bergamot. Add these to your tub of warm water and it’s ready.
3. Air Freshener
For this, you will need a new 4 to 6 ounces spray bottle with fine mist setting.
If you want to produce a calming scent, pour 10 drops of Lime, 14 drops of Bergamot, 4 drops of Ylang Ylang, shake the bottle well to produce a perfect blend. Another alternative to this is by mixing 5 drops of Clary Sage, 10 drops of Lavender and 10 drops of Mandarin.
A welcoming, friendly mix can be produced by pouring i) 5 drops of Sandalwood, 15 drops Bergamot, 2 drops of Jasmine, 2 drops of Rose; or ii) 5 drops of Sandalwood, 2 drops of Jasmine, 2 drops of Ginger, 10 drops of Bergamot and 3 drops of Lime into the spray bottle. Add three ounces of water to the mixture and shake well before using. Spray lightly. Avoid getting the mist into contact with skin or furniture.
4. Aromatherapy to soothe aching feet
Get a pail and pour water which is just enough to cover your feet. Add three drops of peppermint oil into the water, then place your feet inside the pail for as long as you desire.
