Aging is an irreversible process, yet people are not too willing to go through this natural experience because youth is too good to lose.

We are fortunate to discover that we can delay the aging process by eating the foods that can do the job for us.  Please read on to know some of the foods that help to delay aging:

1. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is a good anti-aging food because it is rich in flavonoids.  This substance helps to give you a soft glowing skin and protects it from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.  But you should eat chocolate in moderation because consuming it in excessive quantities can be harmful to your health.

2. Fish

Fishes which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids can play a big role in making you feel young, vivacious and full of energy.  They help to lower the cholesterol levels in your body which is the primary cause of strokes and heart diseases.  They also help to boost your immune system and improve your brain functions and memory.  Don’t let age overtake you mentally. Eat lots of salmon, tuna and mackerel and other foods which are rich in omega-3.

3. Berries

Berries are among the foods which contain powerful antioxidants that help to maintain the youth of your skin and eyesight.  It helps to prevent macular degeneration, an eye disorder which develops with age.

Blueberries are also known for their skin-enhancing properties.  They contain potent antioxidants that help to prevent free radicals from damaging your skin.

4. Protein-rich Foods

As you age, you will need more protein in your diet because your muscle mass will start to deteriorate by up to one percent per year.  You can help to slow it down by increasing your intake of protein as you age.

Lean meats, beans and soy are common food sources of protein.  They are also rich in other minerals like phosphorous, calcium and potassium which can help to sustain your body’s energy needs.

5. Whole Grains

Whole grains are rich in fiber, potassium and magnesium which are helpful in sustaining your health and energy needs even as you age.  These foods also help to protect you from the risks of high blood pressure, colon cancer, obesity and diabetes. Whole grains include oats, cereals, brown rice and whole wheat.

6. Red Wine

Red wine is known to protect your eyes from macular degeneration.  It is also believed to help in reducing the risk of osteoporosis, a bone disease which develops as a person grows older.

7. Green Vegetables

Green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, lettuce and spinach are powerful anti-aging foods because they are loaded with antioxidants and flavonoids.  These substances help to delay aging by protecting you from the harmful effects of free radicals on your cells.

8. Water

Water is not food because it is a drink.  But it possesses anti-aging properties that just can’t be ignored.  It hydrates your skin and makes it look younger.  It also helps to flush out toxins which would otherwise keep your immune system busy.  You should drink plenty of water to stay healthy and strong.  Avoid drinking sodas and sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic drinks as substitute for water because they can cause dehydration instead.
