Cancer is a degenerative disease that begins in the cells of our body.  It happens when abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.

Our body is made up of many types of cells.  These cells grow and divide in a controlled way to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy.  When cells become old or damaged, they die and are replaced with new cells.

However, this process can go wrong.  The genetic material (DNA) of a cell can become damaged or changed, producing mutations that affect normal cell growth and division. When this happens, cells do not die when they should and new cells form when the body does not need them. The extra cells may form a mass of tissue called a tumor.

There are many ways of preventing cancer, and one of them is eating foods which are rich in lycopene.

Lyocpene is an antioxidant compound that gives tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, papaya, grapefruit and apricot, their color.  Recent studies show that regular intake of lycopene can decrease the development of certain types of cancer, including lung, stomach, bladder, skin and prostate cancer.

Tomatoes are one of the best food sources of lycopene, and one of the best ways to get lycopene is through juicing them and other fruits or vegetables which are loaded with this potent antioxidant.  Here are some juicer recipes which can help to provide you with lots of lycopene:

1. Tomato Juice


5 pieces large tomatoes


Remove stems, wash thoroughly and juice.

2. Watermelon Juice


1/4 of medium sized watermelon


When juicing watermelon, do not include the rind of the fruit because it can give a sour taste to your juice.  The flesh is all you need to the fruit’s natural taste and the lycopene it contains.

3. Pink Grapefruit Juice


2 pieces pink grapefruit

Peel your two pink grapefruits and juice.

4. Pink Guava and Apricot Juice


2 pieces pink guava
3 pieces apricots


Remove the skins of the pink guavas and take out the stone of the apricot then juice the pink guava flesh and the seedless apricot.

5. Carrot and Red Bell Pepper Juice


4 pieces large carrots
1 piece red bell pepper


Top and tail your carrots and red bell pepper.  Remove the pith and seeds from your pepper and place them both in your juicer.
