Metabolism is defined as the sum total of the chemical processes that occur in your body.  This results in growth, production of energy and elimination of waste material.

Your body needs an efficient metabolic system to stay energized.  Some of the indications of poor metabolism include physical and mental fatigue, weight gain and lack of stamina and endurance.   You need to ensure that your metabolism is in top condition in order to be productive.  Here are seven ways that can help to improve your metabolism:

1. Drink plenty of water

Water is the best element to keep your metabolism up and functioning normally.  You body normally requires at least 2 liters of water everyday to keep it hydrated, but if you are engaged in a lot of mental and physical exertion, you need to consume at least 3 liters of water.  You can also make your drinking experience healthier by adding lemon or wheatgrass juice to your water every once in a while.

2. Eat healthy breakfasts

The breakfast is your most important meal of the day.  You should not skip it in order to stay healthy, strong and alert all day.  Go for organic breakfasts which are loaded with protein and enough carbohydrates to burn for fuel.  Try to avoid sugar and refined grains products like bread and cookies.  Try drinking tea instead of coffee for your morning beverage.

3. Get enough sleep

Give your body enough rest and it will give you a maximum performance in return.  Rest your body by taking at least eight hours of sleep each night.  This will help to keep your systems working, including your metabolism.  Get the best of your sleep by avoiding caffeine after 5 PM and by eating a light supper.

4. Exercise

Your body needs to move to keep your metabolism up and running.  A 30-minute exercise such as jogging or a cardio workout can help to boost your metabolism.

5. Eat more frequently in small quantities

Eating in small chunks more frequently, like five times a day is better for your metabolism than eating in large quantities three times a day.

6. Get enough B-Vitamins

Vitamin B is a key player in the metabolic process.  Inadequate amounts of B complex vitamins can slow your body’s metabolic process and leave you feeling tired or depressed.  Natural food sources of B vitamins include spinach, asparagus, beans, fish, poultry and eggs.

7.  Take plenty of antioxidants

The role of antioxidants in boosting metabolism has not yet been fully established.  But they do help to protect your body from the harmful effects of free radicals which can cause a number of health problems including cancer.  Food sources which are rich in antioxidants include fruits and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli and lettuce.
