The heart is one of the strongest organs of the human body. It keeps your body up by constantly supplying it with oxygen rich blood. Your body needs a healthy heart to keep your it in shape.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 25 percent of Americans deaths are caused by heart diseases. This alarming rate has been attributed to poor lifestyle.

In order to find measures to prevent the risk of heart disease, the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health conducted a study. Their findings suggest that there are three main factors that can cause heart problems.

The three main causes of heart diseases are:

1. Smoking

Cigarettes contain chemicals that cause high blood pressure, lower the level of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) in the body and cause damage to your blood vessels. All of these factors can jeopardize your cardiovascular health and contribute to your risk of getting a heart attack.

2. Excessive Alcohol Intake

Too much alcohol intake is another cause for high blood pressure and obesity. Excessive drinking on a long term basis makes you prone to cardiomyopathy, a permanent damage of the heart which is manifested by its enlargement.

Beer, hard liquor and wine are among the alcoholic drinks you should take in moderation in order to avoid the risk of heart disease.

3. Excess Belly Fat

You may not know it, but recent studies showed that excess belly fat is associated with the risk of heart disease. The study further suggest that every two inches of excess belly fat can increase your chances of getting a heart disease by almost 20 percent.

The research also came up with a few guidelines that you should follow in order to maintain a healthy heart. These are:

1. Get a Risk Assessment

First, you should know how high are your risks of getting a heart attack by getting a risk assessment. You can ask your doctor about it.

2. Avoid Getting Overweight, Eat the Right Foods

Like a host of other major illnesses, obesity is also associated with obesity. The foods that help to make your heart healthy include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, poultry and nuts.

3. Get that Body Moving, Exercise

Engaging in a regular exercise regimen makes your heart healthy and strong, and a strong heart makes a sound body. You should keep your heart pumping hard to make its muscles strong and durable. Lack of exercise and strenuous physical activity can weaken your heart overtime.

These tips are simple, but they can reward you with a long, healthy life if you will consider them seriously.
