Meditation is an art. It is a practice of being aware of one's inner and outer self at the present moment. It involves the use of the mind to achieve certain objectives which include relief from stress, relaxation and improved concentration and spiritual and growth.

Many people have attempted to make meditation a regular part of their lives but most of them were not able to stick with the practice. One of the reasons for their failure to sustain the practice in the long term is their lack of will power to overcome its initial challenges.

Here are some meditation tips that can help beginners hurdle the initial challenges of meditation:

1. Set a specific time for your daily meditation. A regular schedule can help to condition your mind to achieve a meditative mode.

2. Begin your meditation with deep breathing exercises. It can help to relax your muscles and condition your mind to focus.

3. Stretch your body to relax your muscles and to achieve flexibility. This can help to make you more comfortable as you concentrate.

4. Meditate with purpose. You cannot achieve a meditative state unless you consciously put your mind and heart to it. You should understand that meditation requires 100 percent attention and focus, and it requires a lot of hard work at the start.

5. As a beginner, frustration will be one of your greatest challenges especially if you have difficulty focusing, and your mind keeps on wandering to other thoughts. When this happens, you really need to go back on track by concentrating on your breath and let your frustrations pass by.

6. Do not limit or confine yourself to the belief that meditation has to be done on lotus or cross-legged position. You can actually meditate on any position that you're comfortable with. Remember, the most essential aspect of meditation is focus.

7. When you meditate, be consciously aware of your body parts. Starting focusing on your feet and gradually move upwards, including your internal organs like your lungs and heart.

8. Designate a specific place for your meditation such as a room where distractions are a rare occurrence. Make it more conducive to your spiritual practice by placing candles or spiritual paraphernalia in it. These can help to set you in the right mood.

9. Motivate yourself by reading books about the benefits and proper ways of meditation.

10. Commit yourself to the practice. Strive to make it a way of life for you.

11. Keep stillness one of the most important elements of your meditation. It can greatly help to take you to a deep state of inner consciousness. When you meditate, you must see to it that you are free from noise and distractions for the entire duration of your meditation session.

12. When you meditate, light a candle and use it as your point of focus to easily arrive at a meditative state. A visual aid can be a powerful tool in meditation.

13. As a beginner, strive to practice meditation early in the morning as it is quieter and your mind is still fresh and not yet occupied with distracting thoughts.

14. When you are finished with your meditation, be thankful to yourself for your efforts. Allocate at least two minutes to appreciate yourself for your ability to stay focused.

These are basic steps that can help you to develop your meditation skills.

Understand meditation and make it a way of life. It is a way to the oneness of the mind, body and spirit.

Many people find meditation as a great way to relax and achieve peace of mind. It is a way that gives you a quick turn from the concerns of your daily life, to put your mundane activities behind for a while, and to experience unity of your body, mind and spirit. This means that for a few minutes, you have to turn off your cell phone, leave your computer, and focus on your inner self.

Meditation is an effective way to relieve stress.

For people who want to practice meditation and experience its benefits, here are some important things that you need to know about it:

1. Finding the Right Place to Meditate

You can actually meditate anywhere for as long as you are comfortable, free from distractions and in a place that can motivate you to do your spiritual activity.

A place for meditation should be quiet and free from noise such as telephone, radio and television sounds. You should see to it that other people in your house know that you are using the place to spend quiet time with yourself. Ask them to not disturb you when you are in that place.

Make that place conducive to meditation by making it smell nice. The smell of incense or candles can help to enhance your feeling of spirituality.

You can also meditate with nature as your surroundings. It can help you to get closer to the majestic creations of the Supreme Being.

2. Assuming the Right Posture

The most popular meditative posture is to sit with legs folded with the hands resting above the lap or on the knees. But it doesn’t mean that everyone should assume this position while meditating.

You can actually meditate on any position as long as you are comfortable and able to concentrate at the same time. To achieve a balance of concentration and comfort, you must see to it that your posture will not create pain to enable you to concentrate without distractions. On the other hand, your posture shall not be too comfortable as it can make you fall asleep.

3. Determining the Length of the Meditation

Many practitioners are happy with 10 to 20 minutes meditation twice per day, but a lot of beginners are still wondering about the ideal length of meditation time that they need to spend.

The length of your meditation does not actually matter much. The important thing is that it has benefited you for the time you spent on it and that you are doing it on a regular basis.

Spending 5, 10, or 20 minutes twice a day to meditate doesn’t really matter as long as you enjoy it and you do it on a regular basis.

This is the second of a two-part series that cover the benefits of walking meditation.

In the previous chapter, we discussed the important steps in performing this meditation technique. Those steps will take us to a point of achieving a balance of our inner and outer selves.

By attaining that balance, our minds can experience stillness, calmness and clarity. It helps to make us peaceful, content, and quiet.

This chapter intends to enumerate the benefits of walking meditation. These are:

1. It helps to improve your endurance to long journeys on foot.

If you engage in walking meditation on a regular basis, you will not only feel the stillness and calm that it is able to give. It also helps to develop your stamina to walk long distances.

Walking is itself an exercise that helps to strengthen the muscles of your lower body. It can stimulate your body to release feel good hormones that relieve stress. Combining walking with meditation is a great way to achieve physical, mental, and spiritual strength and awareness.

2. It helps to develop persistence of the mind.

Like other forms of meditation, walking meditation requires you to develop your mind to become consciously aware of every breath and movement that your body takes. This requires effort and persistence.

Overtime, you will develop a sense of awareness of your inner and outer self while releasing the tension through your walking exercise.

3. It helps to boost your immune system and make you more resistance to diseases.

Walking helps to improve your oxygen intake which in turn oxygenates your blood that nourishes all the cells of your brain and body.

Combine it with reduced stress levels and you will have an excellent immune system that helps to protect you from organisms that can cause diseases.

Walking meditation also helps to alleviate diabetes and remove extra pounds from overweight individuals.

4. It helps to improve digestion.

Health experts are against the idea of taking large meals at night because digestion can be difficult when you are asleep.

Walking meditation stimulates your body to secrete gastric juices to thoroughly digest the food you eat. Proper digestion can keep you away from flatulence, dyspepsia and stomach pains.

5. It can help you to develop concentration that lasts longer.

Walking meditation helps to improve your circulation which can translate to mental and physical alertness. This can help to enhance your focus and develop your ability to concentrate for longer periods.

These are some of the know benefits of walking meditation. Practice it constantly and reap one of its greatest benefits which are physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Walking meditation is a meditation in action. It is an ancient form of meditation which was practiced by Buddha himself. It has some similarity with casual walks but instead of just taking ordinary paces to your point of destination, you have to be conscious of what’s going on inside and around you. When you are engaged in a walking meditation, you have to be aware of the sensations that you get when you walk and you need to be mindful of your walking experience and let it fill you with calm insight.

To enjoy the benefits of walking meditation, your first task is to know the stages involved in it. These are:

1. Standing

Begin your meditation by simply standing still. Be aware of your breathing and notice the weight that is transferred from the soles of your feet into the ground. Be conscious of the efforts that you make in order to maintain your balance.

2. Walking

Start to walk in a slow but normal pace. Just walk the way you normally do, except that you need to be aware of your breathing and movements.

3. Awareness of your Body

Focus on the soles of your feet and be aware of their alternating patterns of contact and release right from the point when your heel touches the ground until you lift your foot into the air to make another step. You should also be aware of how your feet feel inside your shoes. Let them be as relaxed as you can.

From the soles of your feet, you expand your awareness to the other parts of your body starting from your ankles, your lower legs and calves up to your knees, thighs, hips and spine belly, chest, shoulders, forearms, hands, fingers and neck.

Feel your skin come into contact with your clothing. Be aware of its temperature, and notice the movements of your other muscles move as you walk. Try to relax all those muscles. Be aware of the rhythmic movements of your arms. Feel the air that brushes though your hands and forearms as they swing with every step you make.

Then be aware of your neck and the muscles that support your head. Allow them to relax. Constant practice will make you experience a new sense of consciousness, especially when you allow your head to just hang freely without support. After a few seconds, you should bring your head back to its point of balance.

Relax your jaw and your eyes. Look gently ahead without staring at anything. Just let things you see pass by without getting caught up in them. Just be aware of what happens around and inside of you. At this stage, you will be aware of the presence of pleasant or unpleasant feelings that you have in your body or in your surroundings. Just let them be and allow them to drift by. This will allow you to experience a balance of your inner and outer world.

4. Reaching the Point of Stillness

Once you notice a balance of your inner and outer world, your mind will settle to a point of stillness, calmness and clarity. Having reached this point, you mind will become content and quiet.

At this stage, you need to come to a natural halt. But you don’t have to stop on the spot. Just come to a halt and remain standing and take notice that you are no longer in motion.

Once again, feel the experience of your weight being transferred from the soles of your feet into the earth then bring your meditation to a close.

Raja yoga is a form of yoga which is intended to give you control over your mind and emotions. It involves a number of mental exercises which are designed to awaken the deeper faculties of your consciousness. Practicing Raja Yoga on a daily basis helps to give you positive emotional energy and a sense of well-being.

If your mind is peaceful, you will also attain inner peace. If there is peace within each person, the world will be a better place to live in.

We need to live with the aim of achieving peace of mind by understanding our selves and by allowing our souls to radiate positive energy. You can do this by maintaining a flow of positive reflections towards yourself and others. The soul is the spring of energy that creates thoughts.

Engaging in Raja Yoga meditation is one way to achieve inner peace. Doing this mental exercise for just 15 minutes everyday is sufficient to energize you throughout the day.

This article intends to let you know the steps to perform Raja Yoga meditation. Here's how you can do it.

1. Assume a comfortable sitting position and close your eyes. Take slow but deep breaths and sit still with your mind focused on your breathing. Other thoughts might enter your mind at this point. Just let them come and go without focusing on them, and when you are ready, say these to yourself:

2. "I am a peaceful soul and my mind is at peace. I am sending this peace into the world.

As I concentrate, I am now living in silence and peace and thoughts of the outside world is slowly drifting away from my mind. My burdens are lifted and my worries are fading away. I am slowly changing into a beam of light, a light of positive energy that I can share with people around me. I am energy and I continue to fuel my soul with light that drives negative thoughts and emotions away.

As I concentrate, I see myself as a being of light. I begin to realize that my physical body is not me, for I am energy that carries my soul and I shine like a star to bring peace and love to the world around me. And I shall find peace within."

3. The words above serve as an example of what you should say to yourself to obtain inner peace. Just feel free to change them for your ease and convenience. You can either utter these to yourself or say them out loud, and you can incant them anytime of the day, especially in times when you feel stressed, frustrated, angry or worried.

4. Conclude each Raja Yoga meditation session by uttering these to yourself: "My soul is peaceful and today I will send that peace to each person I see."

These are the four important steps of the Raja Yoga meditation. Meditation is an important aspect of self discovery. You should learn to meditate because it can help to keep your mind healthy, peaceful and teeming with positive energy.

Meditation is a wonderful way to achieve inner peace.

If you practice daily meditation, a positive state of mind will gradually develop to change your outlook in life. It can help to relieve you from stressful thoughts that can affect your relationship with yourself, your loved ones, your co-workers and other people.

It is a way to free yourself from the troubles of this world, to pacify your spirit and to give yourself a sense of relief from the chaos and confusions of life.

You should learn to develop the habit of meditating for at least 15 minutes as you wake up early in the morning. It can help you to experience inner peace.

In this article, we would like to introduce five simple forms of meditation to help you relax and flow easy with life. These meditations are:

1. Breath Meditation

This is the easiest way to start the habit of meditating. In this technique, you will focus mainly on the natural flow of your breath and the sensation that it brings to your being. It can help to make you aware of the other parts of your body that need attention.

2. Stillness in the Breath Meditation

This is a variation of the breath meditation, and you can do this once you learn to follow your breath for longer periods. It starts with the breath meditation, but if you can focus your breath for longer periods, you will learn to develop awareness of inner stillness. This can help to give you an experience of inner peace.

3. Nature Meditation

As its name implies, this meditation is performed outdoors, with nature as all around you. This meditation helps to awaken your relationship with the world, and as you see flowers and trees, hear the sound of birds and feel the gentle breeze, you will become aware that your life needs to be in perfect harmony with nature.

4. Sitting Meditation

As the name suggests, this meditation technique requires you to sit in a quiet place far away from distractions and disturbances.

As you assume a comfortable sitting position, you should control you mind and not let it wander freely. Breathe naturally and observe each inhalation and exhalation and feel the air touching your nostril, the middle of your chest and your abdomen.

This meditation helps to calm delusive thoughts and to manifest your true nature. It also helps to put your mind and body in harmony. It refreshes your spirit and gives you renewed energy.

5. Walking Meditation

Walking meditation is one of the most common methods of mind development in Buddhism. It was developed by Buddha himself and it is still practiced up to this day because of the physical and mental health benefits that it carries.

One of the advantages of walking meditation is its ability to bring your meditative experience into activity.

Anxiety is a psychological disorder characterized by excessive uneasiness and apprehension. It is often associated with compulsive behavior or panic attacks.

Some of the most common physical symptoms of anxiety include headaches, insomnia, muscle tension, fatigue, excessive sweating and concentration difficulty.

What are the Causes of Anxiety and Panic Attack?

The exact cause of anxiety and panic attack is still a subject of study and research by medical and health science. But based on observation and experience, these factors appear to play a role in the development of the disorder.

1. Genetics

People with a family history of anxiety have higher chances of acquiring this condition and passing it on down the line.

2. Stress

This includes the death of a loved one, loss of a job, divorce, pressures at work or school, bill payment deadlines, credit card debt, and other stressful situations.

3. Drug Addiction

Addiction to drugs and other substances like caffeine, alcohol and nicotine is known to contribute to the development of anxiety. Withdrawal from these can also trigger the same condition.

There are many ways to combat anxiety, but one of the safest and less expensive ways to alleviate it is through yoga. Instead of using drugs which carry the possibility of side effects, people practice yoga to find relief.

Here's the way to treat anxiety with yoga:

1. Lie on your back. Put a pillow under your knees and place your arms at your sides with your palms facing up.

2. Close your eyes. Relax and release the tensions from your entire body.

3. Slowly inhale and imagine that you are surrounded by air that's full of energy.

4. Imagine that your body is absorbing the energy that surrounds you.

5. Exhale slowly. As you release air, imagine the tension draining away from your body as you breathe out.

6. Repeat the entire process for at least five minutes.

A mind-body exercise is defined as physical exercise routine which is done with a strong sense of focus with the use of four of the six Pilates principles which are breathing, precision, control and concentration.

In order to make things clear, mind-body exercises are different from meditation relaxation exercises. It is the type of exercise which is aimed to uphold a person's physical well-being by doing exact movements that control and balance his own body-weight.

Two examples of mind-body exercises that can trigger the flow of energy in the body are Yoga and Taichi.

Yoga

Yoga is an ancient Indian science which aims to unite the mind, body and spirit. Being practiced for thousands of years, its principles, which are composed mostly of ancient theories, have been proven by modern medicine to be beneficial to human health by way of its physiological, psychological and biochemical effects.

This ancient exercise which is intended to release the tensions in the body, can restore calmness to the nervous system and uplift the practicing person's emotional state. This is done through stretching, focused breathing and doing gentle movements which ultimately relieve stress and restores energy to the body.

Yoga also enhances concentration as it promotes healing and flexibility. According to people who practice the exercise, it is very effective that they experienced feeling a calm energy right after their very first yoga session.

According to Indian researchers, people who perform yoga on a regular basis are more resistant to fatigue and stress than people who don't practice it.

You might want to try yoga at home by purchasing a beginner's yoga DVD.

Tai Chi or Qi Gong

Tai Chi and Qi Gong are traditional Chinese mind-body exercises aimed at reducing stress by promoting serenity through gentle movements, meditation and breath control.

The benefits of Tai Chi, which is described by practitioners as "meditation in motion," include the improved flow of vital energy in the body, better circulation and a stronger immune system. It is the most widely practiced mind-body exercise in the world with over 200 million people practicing it daily in China alone. It is also a type of mind-body exercise that is applicable to people of all ages because of its gentle flowing movements that anybody from the very young to the very old can do.

If you think Tai Chi might be good for you, you can try it by buying a DVD for your home use.

Mind-body exercises are natural forms of stress relieving techniques which are composed of fun activities that improve a person's sense of well-being.

The pace of this world has gone so fast that it has become difficult for us to find relief. If only inner peace and self awareness are available in stores, it would be the hottest commodity in the market in any given time.

But there is one way to shut out the external world from our inner selves. It can happen when we are able to control our minds and focus on the unity of our mind body and spirit. This can help us to escape from the pressures and stress that this world is putting directly on us.

Here are some of the benefits of practicing meditation:

1. It helps to reduce stress.

Persons who are not affected by too much stress have good physical, mental and spiritual outlooks. Being stress-free means freedom from anxiety and some diseases that spring from it.

2. It helps to normalize blood pressure.

Being a calming practice, meditation can help to keep your blood pressure in check.

3. It helps to boost the immune system.

With stress out of the way, the body can have more energy to fight off disease-causing organisms to keep you strong and protected.

4. It helps to reduce pain.

According to an American research published in the Journal of Neuroscience, practicing meditation can alleviate pain better than powerful drugs.

5. It helps to cure insomnia.

With meditation, you can go to a deeper level of concentration and relaxation. This will help to relieve stress and increase your level of serotonin which plays a big role in your mood, behavior and sleeping patterns. Low serotonin levels are linked to insomnia, headaches and depression.

6. It helps to improve oxygen supply to your brain and body.

The practice of meditation requires you to focus on your breathing. This will help to increase oxygen supply to your blood which will circulate to your entire body and brain. The process can make you physically and mentally alert, stress-free, feeling refreshed and energized.

7. It helps to improve concentration.

In every endeavor or activity, concentration is essential to help us maximize our potentials. You can draw immense power and energy with great focus.

Meditation is a mental activity that requires you to practice focus and one-pointedness. By meditating regularly, you can develop the power of your concentration to the fullest.

8. It helps to improve memory.

Meditation works on the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain that controls memory recall and logical thought. By regularly engaging in meditation, the natural functions of the cerebral cortex are sharpened, enhancing your capacity to concentrate.

Daily meditation is the natural cure for poor memory and memory loss.

Other benefits of meditation include:

1. It helps to boost our self confidence.

2. It helps us to accept ourselves and to learn to forgive.

3. It makes us calmer even under stressful situations.

4. It helps to give us peace of mind and be more aware of our inner self.

5. It allows us to live in the present moment.

Meditation is the art of unifying the mind, body and spirit with the goal of achieving real focus and calm and to recharge the body with positive energy that comes from within.

People who meditate on a regular basis often reach a point where they experience relaxation, awareness, focus and a sense of inner peace.

Learning meditation is not very difficult, but it cannot happen overnight. If you want to practice mediation, the first thing you need to do is to learn the basics. It involves knowing how the different postures and determining which of those can make you feel more relaxed without experiencing discomfort that can only defeat your purpose.

You also need to avoid pressuring yourself to expect positive results otherwise you will miss the experience of creating a peaceful state of mind.

Here are some of the postures that you need to consider as part of your meditation:

1. The Lotus Posture

The lotus posture is the most popular of all meditation poses but some people find it difficult to do. It requires you to sit cross-legged with your right foot resting on your left thigh and your left foot placed on your right thigh.

This position is commonly practiced by intermediate to advanced meditation practitioners. As a beginner, meditation will be a lot easier if you begin with simpler positions.

2. The Half Lotus Posture

The half lotus posture is a lot easier to do because it requires you to fold just one leg instead of both of them.

3. The Burmese Posture

The Burmese posture is easy to do because it does not require you to cross your legs. Instead, it asks you to fold your legs in front with both your feet overlapping each other.

4. The Seiza Posture

The seiza posture is one of the easiest and most comfortable postures for every meditation practitioner to do. In this position, you will fold your legs backwards and sit on your feet. It is done in a semi-kneeling position. To make yourself more comfortable, you can put a pillow between your feet and your bottom.

Your posture is not the most important part of the meditation process but the meditation itself. While they can help to make you more alert and aware, they are actually intended to make you comfortable so you can meditate successfully. You don't have to bother yourself too much about them.
