Aging is a condition that everything in this world cannot avoid. Everything grows old all things deteriorate in the passage of time.

People have done so many things to discover the formula for staying young, but no one has found it; everyone is really destined to face the senior years of life.

Since old age is inevitable, we are obliged to face it. It is a reality that we have to go through. And the best thing that we need to do is to prepare ourselves in order to live those years happily and in good physical shape.

Here are some of the ways to stay healthy as a senior citizen:

1. Change your lifestyle if necessary.

As we grow older, our physical, mental and emotional faculties tend to deteriorate. These include our speed, strength, resistance, endurance, metabolism, and ability to think and decide.

As you reach the age of 50, your body will begin to show signs of wear and tear. Your blood pressure will become erratic, your blood sugar is no longer consistent, you will accumulate some fats and you will notice certain aches or discomforts in your joints and muscles.

These indications call for a need to introduce some changes into your lifestyle in preparation for the years ahead. You need to start avoiding fatty foods, alcohol, and red meat. If you smoke, you need to drop that habit to give your lungs time recover. You also need to get enough rest, drink plenty of water, and eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, cereals, fish and dairy products in order to stay energized and well-nourished.

2. Minimize your salt intake.

Sodium is the primary cause of hypertension. It can also trigger fatigue, kidney stones and water retention. You should minimize it partly by lowering your consumption of processed foods. For women, it would do them good to increase their intake of calcium to prevent the onset of osteoporosis as it is a common problem among aging women.

3. Stay active as much as possible.

Stay active to retain your physical and mental alertness. You need to engage in a regular form of exercise like walking in order to optimize circulation and oxygenation of your body and brain cells. You can also engage in tai chi and yoga as these exercises offer a lot to ease the tensions of muscles and joints of aging individuals. You should do all these exercises moderately to prevent your organs from being stressed out.

4. Visit your doctor on a regular basis.

You need to monitor your health at this stage of your life. This means that you have to visit your doctor for regular checkups even if you don’t feel sick. It is important for men to have regular prostate check ups and it is also good for women to have their bone density checked on a regular basis. This will help to make you aware of any change in your body. You also need to take notice of signs of forgetfulness. It can help to make your doctor decide what to give you to maintain your physical and mental health.

5. Enjoy the company of your friends and loved ones.

Man is a social creature and even in old age, he still needs the company of other people. Being a senior citizen is a special stage in a person’s life. You need to share that life with people you love including those who are important to you. Socializing helps to protect you from loneliness and depression.

6. Always be careful in your activities.

Exercise and physical activities are a must in your life as a senior citizen. But you need to do them with extra care and caution in order to avoid accidents. As you know, the healing process of older individuals takes time. You don’t need to suffer because of any injury.

7. Take your medications regularly.

One of the most important things that you need to do without fail is to take your medicine and vitamins on a regular basis. It can help to keep you energized and in good shape. If any of them is causing you any discomfort, you should inform your doctor at once.

These are some of the things you need to do to stay healthy as a senior citizen. Remember, aging is a natural process and it is a normal part of life. It is a bonus that is given to you. You should enjoy it to the fullest.

The Seed of Honesty

In this article, we would like to tell you of the importance of honesty in our lives.

Honesty is one of the greatest virtues of man. It helps to keep the world in order and it is one of the most important qualities that every responsible person should possess. It is used to measure a person’s worth, loyalty and trustworthiness.

It has made people rise from poverty to fame and fortune; even men in the bible were able to reap the rewards of this God-given quality.

Honesty is the best policy. It enables us to see who we are inside. It allows us to exercise fairness with our fellow men. It makes speak the truth, make good decisions and do good deeds.

Everyone appreciates honesty and honest people are loved everywhere in the world. It is indeed a mark of integrity and uprightness. But not everyone can be honest because it can sometimes interfere with our personal desires.

Honesty can sometimes be overpowered by greed and ambition for power and success. But success that is achieved by honest means is the sweetest and greatest of them all.

This mind-boosting story was written by an unknown author and it has been published many times in the World Wide Web. We are re-publishing it because we know that it deserves a space here, and also because we know that everyone appreciates this great virtue.

Here is your story:

A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business.

Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, “It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you.”

The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. “I am going to give each one of you a SEED today – one very special SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO.”

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed.

Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn’t have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by — still nothing in Jim’s pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn’t say anything to his colleagues, however… He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil – He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection.

Jim told his wife that he wasn’t going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right.

He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful — in all shapes and sizes.

Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back. “My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown,” said the CEO. “Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!”

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front.

Jim was terrified. He thought, “The CEO knows I’m a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!”

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed – Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, “Behold your next Chief Executive Officer! His name is Jim!”

Jim couldn’t believe it. Jim couldn’t even grow his seed.

“How could he be the new CEO?” the others said.

Then the CEO said, “One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead – it was not possible for them to grow. All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!”

- If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.

- If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.

- If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.

- If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment.

- If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective.

- If you plant hard work, you will reap success.

- If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.

- If you plant faith in God , you will reap a harvest.

So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later.

Whatever you give to life, life gives you back.

How to Perform Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is a form of meditation which allows you to meditate even in the presence of distracting thoughts and feelings.

Repetitive thoughts and distracting feelings are not uncommon when you meditate, but with mindfulness meditation, you will be able to acknowledge and observe them without reacting to them as they come into your mind. In effect, these thoughts will just pass and fade away without. Mindfulness meditation is a wonderful way to find peace and tranquility despite the disturbance of outside factors.

Steps in Performing Mindfulness Meditation

1. Find a quiet and comfortable place to meditate.

Mindfulness meditation is intended to give you the ability to meditate even in the presence of distractions. But as a beginner, you have to practice it in a quiet place where you can spend some quiet time alone. Before you start, make sure that your radio, television and phone are off.

Meditation is intended to relax your mind and body and you need to be comfortable when you practice it. When you perform this meditation, you don’t need to actually sit with your legs crossed; you can do it even if you are sitting on a chair. Just be sure that you are seated comfortably with your back straight. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. It can also help you to perform this meditation more comfortably.

2. Begin your meditation.

Close your eyes and start to focus on your breathing. Breathe through your nostrils and be aware of the coming in and going out of the air through your air passages. You should relax as you perform this routine. Don’t concentrate too hard as it can cause you to tense up. When thoughts come into your mind, just observe them and allow them to pass. Just continue to focus on your breathing.

3. Ignore any emotion that may come while you meditate.

Emotion is another factor that can prevent you from achieving the meditative state that you intend to reach. It can distract you and take you away from your focus.

If an emotion comes up inside you, just observe it without feeling attached to it. You have to treat it as though it were a sign on the street that you see everyday. You understand it, but you are not attached to it.

You can acknowledge any emotion that rises up within you as you meditate. Just observe them without resisting them and without labeling them as good or bad. Just continue to focus on your breathing even if distracting thoughts and emotions persist.

4. Practice mindfulness meditation until you learn it.

Continuous practice is the way to train your mind to meditate despite distracting thoughts and feelings.

If you are a first-timer, you can do mindfulness meditation for five minutes on the first day, ten minutes on the second day, fifteen minutes on the third day, and so on. The most important point is to give focus on your breathing. If distracting thoughts and emotions come up, just observe them and let them pass. Overtime, you will learn to relax and attain inner peace despite troubling thoughts and feelings.

5. Use mindfulness bell to help you develop your meditation technique.

Mindfulness bells are effective tools that can help you to develop your meditation skills. You can use its sound as a good focal point for your meditation. It can catch your attention, but as it slowly fades, it makes you focus on the silence.

You don’t actually need to buy yourself a bell for this purpose. A recording of a mindfulness bell can do very well to help you attain a deep meditative state.

These are the steps you need to perform in order to learn mindfulness meditation. Try them to be able to meditate even if you are visited by disturbing thoughts and emotions.

3 Simple Ways to Evaluate Your Writing Skills

If you want to make writing a profession, one of the things you need to do to achieve your goal is good written communication skills.

But before you start to find writing projects, you would always want to make sure that your writing is acceptable to your prospective clients, ezines, or article directories. You need to assess your writing to be sure that it passes the criteria of your clients and their readers. It is a big factor that can help to give you the confidence to vie for writing projects.

Here are three simple ways to evaluate your writing skills.

1. Write an article, leave it and review it after two to three days.

One of the ways to know if your writing is of acceptable standard is to write an article about a subject that you are passionate about then leave it. But you have to come back to review it two to three days later.

You cannot evaluate the quality of your written piece if you review it right after you finish writing that essay. You have a tendency to be emotionally attached to your article while it is still fresh in your mind and it can affect your judgment. If you own a web log, you may publish your essay and come back to it when your emotional connection to it has subsided. It can put you in a better position to make an objective evaluation of your written work.

2. Take a hint from the search engines.

Search engines can help to make a rough evaluation of your writing. The recent search engine algorithms are now equipped with the ability to determine relevancy and quality of web content. Its spiders constantly sweep the web to index websites and to rank them according to the quality of their contents.

A good Google ranking is an indication that your content is getting favor from readers and search engines.

3. Post your content on social networking sites.

Get your content exposed on social networking sites such as Facebook to see if it gets a lot attention from your friends and contacts. If it gets a lot of likes and shares, it is a good indication that your article is well-liked for its information, quality, or substance.

4. Make an objective evaluation of your work.

Avoid judging your work as good or bad because it can prevent you from seeing areas that need improvement. Make an objective evaluation of your work instead. You can do this by setting a criterion where flawless means 100. Deduct points from every error that you find. The results can help to let you measure your improvement as you go along in your writing career.
